Underlying Studies Building Construction

Course Price: $85.00

Course Description

This module describes underlying studies in the construction industry with a focus on building construction.

The construction estimating process, though different in some ways, is similar for contractors of all disciplines. To estimate the cost of a project, a contractor must be able to:

  • Visualize the construction process for a project
  • Understand the way the work is to be performed
  • Estimate the time required, based upon a set of drawings and specifications

The contractor is required to provide the owner with a guaranteed cost of services before knowing what the actual costs will be upon completion. Consequently, the contractor must exercise extreme care when developing an estimate, since guaranteeing prices before actual completion could mean loss of profit if unforeseen costs arise.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course the student should:

  • Learn how to select appropriate members of a site investigation team
  • Identify the main components of a site visit
  • Identify issues for research during a thorough site visit
  • Identify potential issues related to local resources and requirements
  • Learn the essentials of a good site report
  • List the ways the design decision may affect building construction methods
  • Identify ways in which equipment, plant, labor and timing may affect building construction methods
  • Identify situations in which several construction methods should be compared
  • Establish the logic for a preliminary schedule
  • Identify factors that shape the preliminary schedule time
  • Identify situations requiring special schedules
