Electricity is one of the most important technological advantages we have today. We tap the help of electricity more often than we’re probably aware of, especially at work. In relation to this, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has worked with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to develop a system that will mitigate the electrical hazards: NFPA 70e.

Absence of GFCI

The ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a modern life saver that deserves attention, especially for areas that are prone to ground faults. The GCFI can measure the difference in the amount of current flowing into the circuit to that flowing out. When a sensor inside recognizes that they are not equal, it reacts immediately and shuts down the system. So, if a human starts receiving shock from the power source, the GFCI will kick in right away to prevent any serious injury.

Faulty electrical wiring

Not only will it automatically fail in terms of aesthetics, a poor electrical wiring system can also put your whole facility in jeopardy. The common signs of faulty wiring are as follows:

  • sparking
  • dimming or flickering lights
  • hot outlets, and
  • too many extension chords

Electrical circuit overload

I’m sure you can agree we’ve all been guilty of this, whether we’re doing it indirectly or just being stubborn. Aside from overloading all our electronics into a single power source, overloading can also be caused by: plugging an adaptor into another adaptor, not checking the current rating of our adaptors, or plugging appliances that exceed 13 amps into one adaptor. For the latter, it’s best to remember to keep electronics that consume a lot of amps in separate power sources.

Outdated circuit breakers and fuse boxes

The older version of circuit breakers and fuse boxes have not been designed to withstand the use of high-voltage appliances and electronics that we use today. If the aforementioned equipment at work are severely behind the latest standards, it’s best to have them taken care of and upgraded immediately.

Electrical equipment is in poor condition

This particular hazard can be encountered both indoors and outdoors. A faulty appliance, an outdated equipment, or an electronics that’s not properly shut off or operated is always one short circuit away from harming its user. It’s important to have regular equipment maintenance checks, and have all employees following safety operational procedures when using high-voltage equipment.
