Prevent Workplace Violence

Your workplace is where you make a living and improve your trade. The last thing you want to deal with at work is someone who pushes you around or threatens you with a firearm. Statistics show that violence on the job is a big concern. According to OSHA, homicide is the fourth major cause of death among workers. Here are five ways to prevent violence or bullying at work:

#1: Educate Employees

Educating your employees is the primary preventive measure. If your workers do not know the red flags, then they are more vulnerable to the hazards of workplace violence. Taking a relevant course can help them to learn the proper procedures for handling workplace violence. Other training programs can also teach workers how to protect themselves in violent situations—such as mass shootings, bullying incidents, or harmful attacks by outsiders.

#2: Create a Secure Workplace

Promote your workers’ peace of mind by providing them with a safe and secure work environment. Consider installing video surveillance cameras and increasing the amount of lighting at work. If you’re always on the move or working at various construction sites, hire security guards to go with your construction crew. This can give extra protection to employees who are working in places with high crime rates or dangerous settings. Providing workers with identification badges can also help to prevent outsiders from causing untoward incidents.

#3: Communicate Regularly

When you have employees who are working in various locations—such as communication tower workers—it is more difficult to stay on top of violent situations. But regular communication can help in keeping you abreast of any problems that may arise. Consider using cell phones, walkie-talkies, beepers, and other communicating devices to stay connected with your employees. Touch base throughout the work period, so you can be updated if something goes wrong.

#4: Provide Well-Maintained Equipment and Mode of Transportation

Aside from the necessary equipment, make sure that the employees’ work trucks or other forms of transportation are in good condition. This helps to ensure that your workers have a way to get out of a bad situation. If they are working out of the state or in another region, consider providing them with more than one mode of transportation (for instance, two work trucks instead of just one). This gives them an alternative in case one truck breaks down.

#5: Address Issues

If your workers recognize that there is an issue, they must address concerns accordingly. Everybody needs to learn how to identify a violent situation—and how to avoid them. If workers are involved in (or victims of) workplace violence, they must know the guidelines when dealing with a violent offender.
