Comic books tell us that hazardous waste comes with some pretty cool perks.
Jon Osterman transformed into Doctor Manhattan (Watchmen) when he was caught in a radioactive particle test. Dr. Freeze and The Joker from Batman became super evil after their run-ins with chemicals. Even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles transformed thanks to a dip into some toxic waste spillage.
What do these super heroes and villains have in common? They were all exposed to hazardous waste. In real life you will not develop super powers for good or evil. The repercussions of exposure are much worse with long-lasting effects.
When an employee develops an illness or dies from exposure to hazardous materials, the effects are far-reaching.
You can be a Superhero
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) require 8 hours of Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) refresher training every 12 months for continued certification. Employers are required to ensure their employees have completed this training if they are involved in hazardous material removal and emergency response activities. If you already completed the 40 Hour HAZWOPER or the 24 Hour HAZWOPER you are required to complete this training annually. Site-specific training will need to be completed by the employer such as protective and respiratory equipment that you will use and the hazards and characteristics of the site.
Don’t Be a Villain
Now, we all know that super villains aren’t exactly OSHA-abiding, what with all the evil plots to take over the world. They forgo all kinds of regulatory workplace safety requirements in their pursuit to control the world. These comic book characters exposed to hazardous waste became good guys and bad guys. In real life exposure to hazardous materials and chemicals can have far-reaching long-term and short-term effects on worker health and safety. That’s why HAZWOPERtraining is required and will definitely protect workers from harm.
The goal of OSHA’s HAZWOPER standard is similar to most superhero’s goals to protect people from harm. HAZWOPER training will teach employees to identify, control, and eliminate potential hazards related to hazardous waste removal and emergency response, continued protection for the health of workers, the public and the environment. With HAZWOPER training employees learn the principles of toxicology, chemical exposures and decontamination.
Taking the course will also teach you about corrosives, solvents, oxidizers and reactive chemicals, personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency procedures.
Once the course is completed the student will receive a certificate of completion that can be immediately printed, and this document is accepted by employers and OSHA as proof of training.
So be a superhero every day and protect yourself from potential exposure. Next year, visit us again to take your 8-hour annual refresher online and stay certified.
