About

What Is HAZWOPER 40-Hour Training?

OSHA created the HAZWOPER standard (29 CFR 1910.120) to make sure that workers who clean up, treat, store, dispose of, or otherwise handle hazardous waste can do their jobs without risking their health and safety. One of the HAZWOPER requirements is that workers receive extensive, structured training before they begin their jobs.

This course meets the instructional requirements for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) workers at the highest level of risk. It includes 24 lessons that cover all the mandatory topics.

We'll start with a module that reviews the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) so that you're compliant with OSHA's 2013 updates to the Hazardous Communication Standard (HCS). You'll learn about OSHA's chemical labeling requirements and learn how to find information about the substances on your worksite.

We'll cover the various hazards you may encounter in your job and how they might affect you. This includes topics like site characterization, toxicology, hazard recognition, hazardous chemical awareness, radiation hazards, and bloodborne pathogens.

Then you'll learn all the tools you need to keep yourself safe. This includes daily precautions like safe work practices, respiratory protection, other personal protective equipment (PPE), and decontamination methods. It also includes required monitoring methods like medical surveillance, air monitoring, material sampling, and more.

Finally, you'll learn about emergencies and special situations, including emergency procedures, confined spaces, excavations, and fire protection.

Please note that after you finish this course, you'll need 3 full days of directly supervised fieldwork to complete your HAZWOPER 40 certification.

Who Should Take the 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training Course?

The HAZWOPER standard is mandatory for people who handle hazardous waste as emergency responders, uncontrolled site hazardous waste site operators, and treatment, storage, and disposal facility (TSDF) workers.

Workers at the highest level of risk need the 40-hour initial training. You need HAZWOPER 40 if you will:

  • Work with and clean up hazardous materials regularly
  • Be involved in the storage and treatment of hazardous substances
  • Have exposure at or above Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs)
  • Work in environments where you need respirators and other PPE for more than 30 days a year
  • Supervise employees who do any of the above

If you'll be handling hazardous waste but your exposure will fall below these thresholds, you may need our HAZWOPER 24 course instead.

HAZWOPER training can also benefit workers in any role that faces hazardous conditions like high concentrations of toxic substances, Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) environments, conditions that pose a fire or explosion hazard, or oxygen-deficient atmospheres.

FAQs

Who Needs HAZWOPER 40-Hour Training Online?

HAZWOPER 40-hour training is required for anyone who handles hazardous waste regularly – meaning they're exposed to materials at or above their Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs) and/or need to wear respirators and other PPE more than 30 days a year.

Supervisors also need 40-hour initial training if they supervise anyone who meets these criteria.

Also, depending on specific safety standards, if you’re involved in hazardous waste operations or emergency response, you may be required to take a 24-Hour or 8-Hour Refresher course.

How do You Get a 40-hour HAZWOPER Certificate?

You achieve Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification upon completion of 40-hour HAZWOPER training.

Is OSHA 40 the Same as HAZWOPER 40?

When people say "OSHA 40," they're confusing two different types of training.

OSHA produces guidelines for Outreach courses, better known as OSHA 10 and OSHA 30. The number indicates the length of the course.

They cover general safety topics for an industry, and when you successfully complete an OSHA Outreach course, you get a "DOL" card (for Department of Labor). These courses are considered optional by OSHA, but state and local regulations may make them mandatory. Plus, many employers use them as a pre-packaged safety primer.

HAZWOPER courses are mandatory for certain types of hazardous waste workers. These courses get shortened to HAZWOPER 40, HAZWOPER 24, and HAZWOPER 8 – where, again, the number indicates course length. Since OSHA is in charge of the HAZWOPER standard, sometimes people conflate the two sets of courses and say "OSHA 40" or "OSHA 24."

How Does Taking Online HAZWOPER Training Work?

All our online HAZWOPER courses can be taken from the convenience of your home. Not only do our courses allow you to fulfill requirements at home, but they are also self-paced, meaning they can be completed whenever you want within a year of your purchase.

Do I Still Need On-Site Training?

Yes. OSHA is clear that initial training can’t be handled entirely online.

Your employer has to supplement this course with the following:

  • Supervised Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) practice with respirators and full protective gear.
  • Site-specific training to familiarize you with the protocols specific to your duties and employer.
  • Three (3) full days of directly supervised fieldwork. The lessons above MUST be separate from supervised fieldwork.

Does This Course Cover the New GHS Communication Standards?

Yes. At the beginning of the course, there is a section devoted to 2013 the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) changes to align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of chemicals (GHS), which is the universal approach to classifying chemicals and communication of hazard information through labels on chemicals and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

When Does My Course Expire?

Your course will expire one (1) year after you purchase it (the date you submit payment) unless the course itself indicates otherwise.

Please read the Terms of Use for more information about course expiration dates.

How Quickly Will I Get My Certificate of Completion?
