About

What is New Miner Safety Training?

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires all new miners and contractors to complete 4 hours of training before you start working. Our MSHA Part 46 New Miner Training package will allow you to meet these requirements so that you can start work safely while maintaining compliance.

You’ll learn about the physical characteristics, types, and operations of surface mines, as well as site rules and emergency procedures.

Additionally, the courses cover a wide range of topics from accident prevention, emergency procedures, and first aid/CPR to identifying and reporting environmental, electrical, and chemical hazards on the job site.

Plus, you’ll gain a better understanding of the rights of miners and miners’ representatives.

Who Should Take New Miner Part 46 Safety Training?

Our package is for new surface miners and surface mining contractors. This includes miners who work in surface nonmetal mines that are designated as shell dredging, sand, gravel, surface stone, surface clay, colloidal phosphate, and surface limestone mines.

Though they are not specifically mentioned in Part 46, operations that produce marble, granite, sandstone, slate, shale, traprock, kaolin, cement, feldspar, and lime should also complete the program.

FAQs

Is This Training for Workers In Underground Mines?

This course is NOT appropriate for coal or other underground miners  since 30 CFR Part 46 applies only to non-metal/non-coal surface mine operations. While some Part 46 training topics may apply to Part 48 training, you will need to seek Part 48 training from an MSHA-approved trainer.

Even if you work only on surface operations of a metal or coal mine, you are required to complete Part 48 training.

If you are unsure about what training you require, please request information from MSHA.

What Should I Do After I Complete My Part 46 New Miner Training?

Once all courses are completed and certificates downloaded, download and complete the MSHA 5000-23 Certificate of Training Form on the MSHA website. You will need to add your mine or independent contractor name, their identification number, and the name of the competent person who can verify the training you received.

Generally, the person signing the form is the Mine Operator or a person acting on behalf of the operator. For example, a company safety official, a trainer employed or contracted by the operator, or a cooperative instructor (such as a state grantee).

360training does NOT sign the 5000-23 form.

When Does My Course Expire?
